Wireless Connection Problems

A reliable wireless connection has become crucial for many people, adding the convenience of mobility to all the other benefits of Internet connectivity. It puts the enormous information that is available online at your fingertips even when you are not at a desk. Sometimes you may lose your connection or experience a weak signal. A number of factors affect the reliability of your wireless connection.

If you are experience wireless Internet connection problems you should first check your cable or DSL. Most modems have four lights and the “data” or “status” light remains on when you have a live Internet connection. If these lights are not on, your cable may be out.

If your cable/DSL is intact, try rebooting your system. Sometimes when your cable or DSL is out for even a few seconds, your system and the wireless router may no longer be able to connect. When you reboot the system, it assigns a new IP address, enabling them to communicate again.

If you use a wireless desktop and you have moved the wireless adapter, you may need to move and set the adapter in a position from where you can find a stronger signal.

While setting up your wireless network you should keep following things in mind:

  • You should not use your pass phrase or your SSID as your last name or first name
  • Fix your wireless channel at 2 or 11 instead of 6
  • You should not leave your wireless network open
  • Position the wireless router in the middle of your home instead of placing it beside a wall
  • Configure your machine not to automatically connect to a wireless network named “linksys“
  • Change your  pass phrase regularly
  • Apart from WEP encryption, also enable WPA2 which will make your wireless network a lot safer.
  • Using AES wireless encryption for wireless gamming slows your network down, avoid it
